the 300 blows...

...would be a really clever title for a blog post if I were to see Zack Snyder's first graphic novel adaptation and find it to be rather craptastic. And while that statement alone would qualify as a perfectly reasonable post on this pointless blog, there's a bit more to the story, as evidenced by the below photo:

Those in the know, particularly those who choose to enlarge this photo to full-size, will immediately recognize this location as one from Zack Snyder's current project, an adaptation of Alan Moore's seminal graphic novel The Watchmen - if anything the The Black Freighter poster should be a dead giveaway. And another:

Not so recognizable - the only real indication of its source is the "WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN" graffiti, though I'm quite convinced that's Rorschach strolling by. And yes, there's a point to this, besides revealing the true depths of my geekitude, and that is that I'm really on the fence about this one. I so want it to be amazing, and these shots do seem to indicate that things are proceeding correctly, but I'm still worried. Sure, I loved Snyder's Dawn of the Dead, but as I said, I haven't seen his other graphic novel adaptation, and I've heard from a few trustworthy sources that it didn't live up to it's potential. And that was The 300, a notable part of the great Frank Miller's oeuvre, but in the world of graphic novels, The Watchmen is king, so genre-defining that it was even given top billing in Time Magazine's list of the best novels of the 20th century. So Mr. Snyder, please don't fuck this one up - after the abominations that were The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and From Hell, us Alan Moore fans can't take much more (though admittedly V for Vendetta was pretty decent, especially considering I didn't particularly care for the source material because EVERYONE FUCKING LOOKED THE SAME).

And thank you Andrew for directing me to the site where these pictures were posted - more can be found by following the link - and furthermore I apologize for neglecting to mention your contributions on the "fresh monkey" post from a few weeks ago. Much like that tail-pulling primate, I guess I'm just a fucking jerk. 'Tevs.
