Well it's finally December, and our lobby smells like pine trees, and I've already seen the first commercial - fast-forwarded, of course - involving an oversized bow on an overpriced car, so that can mean only one thing: it's time for this year's xmas playlist. There's a lot of leeway when it comes to what's included each year, and since I have no idea what was on the 2006 edition because I traditionally delete it, usually with some tearing up, after the glorious Christmas/birthday/New Years trifecta, I'm just gonna list the old standbys that make it in every year:
1. Band Aid, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" - Sure, it's kinda/really cheesy, but IMHO it's a genuinely good song, and sure, it involves Bono, but it also involves Duran Duran. I'll be listening to this one a lot. And yes, I'm kind of embarrassed about it.
2. Coldplay, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" - Yeah, that's right, Coldplay. I still maintain that they've had some really good songs, and since they admit the fact that they're pretty much a watered down Radiohead, I'm fine with them. Though except for paving the way for the awesome Thin White Duke remix of "Talk", X/Y fucking sucked. As for the song, being as it's kind of melancholy and borders on depressing, it's one of my favorite carols. There's also the seminal Judy Garland version that will probably find it's way into the mix. Yeah, I'm a homo.
3. Radiohead, "Winter Wonderland" - The perfect foil for the above. The quality is piss poor as it's from a webcast, but seriously, it's fucking Radiohead. Singing Winter Wonderland. No justification needed.
4. Kylie Minogue, "Santa Baby" - Did I mention I'm a homo?
5. Band Aid 20, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" - See how I brought it full circle there? You like that, I know. Anyway, charity or no, this is crass commercialism at its finest. But still, it's a good song. And yes, Bono's still here, and yes, Dizzee Rascal may have added a questionable verse (which his admittedly grown on me) but Thom Yorke on piano? Johnny Greenwood on guitar? Sugababes, Roisin Murphy, and Rachel Stevens among the vocalists? I'm sold. On a sidenote, with the inclusion of this track 60% of this playlist includes Bono and/or Chris Martin. Ugh.
So yeah, that's it, but as we all know, 5 songs does not a playlist make. That's where you, dear reader, come in, as I am soliciting your suggestions for awesome Christmas songs. Two rules: no religion, no suckery. That is all.
