That was revealed to be a lie, originated by a disreputable German tabloid and parrotted uncritically by the mainstream press. The gentleman in question actually said the opposite - that the zoo should spare the other bear cubs it euthanized, as well as Knut. Of course the media was less interested in them.
Result: Cretins across the internet declaring that a man should die for trying to save the lives of helpless baby bears. Welcome to their ranks!
